    Dear Parents/Guardians:                                                                         July 5, 2017

What an incredible year we had at Matthew Thornton School.
It was great to see so many parents and families here for the MT Family BBQ on June 21st. Thank you also to the tremendous number
of volunteers who helped out for our Field Day, everyone said it was the best yet! Somehow the 4th graders talked me into getting dunked in the dunk tank. Next time, I should plan ahead and bring a change of clothes and maybe a hair dryer. It was refreshing, I must say!!

Mr. McCarthy took over, thankfully and was a good sport to let the students dunk him in the pool as well.  All of the end of year activities: Student Council-sponsored Spirit Week Dress-Up Days, Books and Beyond Assemblies, Field Day and MT Family BBQ Day, Respect Assembly and Step-Up Day/5th Grade Activity were fantastic and the kids were great!! It was a great end to a wonderful year at MT.

We can’t even begin to thank our parents for all of the support this year! The PTA and all of its exceptional volunteers are a vital part of our school community. There isn’t room to thank everyone, but we want to especially thank our PTA officers:  Aaron Duffy (President), Regan Sochanek (President-Elect), Diane Garwood (Treasurer) and Tara Sessa (Secretary) who have done an excellent job this year, what an amazing team!

We would like to wish a Happy Retirement to four of our MTS family members this year.  Sara Blanch has been teaching 1
st grade at MTS for 32 years. We will miss her advice, excellent teaching and dedication but will be happy to know she is moving on to enjoy being a Grandmother. Her contributions to the Londonderry School District have made a significant impact on the education of all Londonderry learners. Kate Dolan, has been teaching at Matthew Thornton School for 23 years in 1st and 2nd grades.  She has served on many committees in the school over the years. She leaves a legacy of professionalism, knowledge and caring and kindness in supporting the parents of our youngest students. She gets visited by many of her former students each year.  Holly Drazen has been the Occupational Therapist at Matthew Thornton for 37 years. She has a kind and welcoming spirit and has helped out many MT students over the years as a leader in OT in the district. Jean Sand has been the Library/Media Specialist for 23 years in our building. She is enthusiastic, knowledgeable and energetic and has instilled in our students a love of reading. Jean helped establish the policy that students can take out “as many books as they can carry”.  We will miss these four exceptional staff members greatly and wish them all the very best.  The PTA has donated bricks with the retirees’ names and dates of service to our school which will be installed, along with our other retirees, in the garden courtyard.

Supplies- In planning for supplies for the next school year, we ask you not to go out and buy any major supplies such as notebooks, etc., but that you wait until your child finds out from their teacher what materials are needed for their own classroom.  Lunch bags and backpacks are always needed, but classroom supplies are unique to each classroom and teacher and some of these may be provided.

Have a happy and safe summer.  Thank you for all of your support.
